Freedom of traffic...!

A town in Germany removed all traffic rules and guess what! The number of accidents plummeted from one-a-week to zilch!

Reason? Not having to look at signs and signals, people are paying more attention to the road and to other things on it! Funny, isn't it!

The town now has two general laws in place - a speed limit of 30 MPH and yield to the right. And the Govt. saves 5,000 pounds a month in traffic sign repair bills.

I cannot imagine what will happen if this were done in Bombay or Bangalore... any guesses? :P

no i cannot even guess. it boggles the mind to attempt to think of such a scenario. waise hi these gusy on the road are so hassled. the other day the rickshaw i was travelling in decided to say something to a jeep wallah. this jeep guy just reaches out and smacks the ricksha wallah yaar all the while abusing him colourfully. i wanted to just jump out of the rick. but traffic in mumbai is bad at the best of times so no rules will simply mean chaos of a higher level:)

what happened to leeches part two? btw the multiplex tussle is over and we are gonna be flooded with films next month. Terminator salvation among them, but you say it is no good? then i will watch it on dvd.

Hi M,

ah... the famous traffic fight... ! some times the rick wallas can be real pests. but then at other times I feel for thm as they are out there trying to earn a living.

The leeches part 2 is cooking - am not getting into the creative mood.

You need to watch the Hangover! Its a laugh riot... seriously funny stuff! R-rated though!

T4 is to be watched on star movies! dont even bother with the dvd! And with the monsoon fast approaching, I hope Bombay does not get flooded yet again!

Just imagining it gave me such a shock I don't wanna think about it anymore!!!

things would be better I think, anyways who gives a damn to the rules so no rules would make the people more alert. The govt should give it a try

Dhanya said...

That is Germany, and this is our very own India! Even if new rules are made, we will find ways to break em ;)

such a situation arises in karachi almost every other day when the lights go off and ooohh boy there is so much chaos that it aint even funny!

please let the signals stay!

Aparna said...

You mean there are traffic rules in Bombay? Where? I only see corrupt policemen hiding behind the signals to catch a violator and accept bribes.

Ann Dee said...

I'd rather wonder what would happen to Hyd... Of all things, I know for sure, D. will never ever let me drive the car again (all that money, training, dreams of setting the street ablaze paani meh).
Augh...I rather not think about it

Vee said...

Oh really wanna give a thought to that? Haha...

vimmuuu said...

LOL, if this is done in Blore or Mumbai, you would have even airplanes on the roads !

Ire said...

No guesses here! Lolz.

couchpapaya said...

they govt wld save pots of money. on a recent trip to blore i noticed that someone has gone overboard with spending on signs.

a yield sign at a busy circle had no one yielding. i asked a lot of people, they had no clue what it even meant.

the ones which had me laughing were all the stop signs - placed right next to traffic lights .... ufff

More accidents, more name-callings in the middle of the road, more honking, more delays, more stress, more bad appraisals, more pay cut!! Recession would be a bad time to implement this no-rule road life in India. Three cheers to Germans. Lesser money, lesser energy too. After Steffi Graf, something hot about Germany again. :D

Nice

btw buddy atleast return my call...hmmm

eye-in-sty-in said...

Ha ha ha - Oye Zebra, what do u have to worry about - Ur Vaio can navigate you around the traffic... unless it doesn't have a GPS :P

Hi Sujata,
Me too thinks the same... They will be better... perhaps people will have to be more courteous to others instead of thinking for themselves! Some times a change is what we all need! Btw, White is very refreshing :-)

Hi Dhanya,
Exactly my point - so many rules are invented, but public finds a way to break or circumvent around them - so why not do something different... If there are no rules at all, what will public break? They will get confused and start acting in a civilized manner :D

Hi AD,
Ya ya- Traffic in Karachi would be similar to any large city in India... The thing about this no-rules funda is that it should be implemented after letting people know that its being done. It will not work in a temporary situation like a power cut induced signal failure... nahi?

Hi Aparna,
You are not a ture Bombaite at heart! A true bombaite will never say such a thing. Bombay has very good traffic sense - people atleast are stopping at traffic lights and they atleast know the concept of lane-driving, unlike other cities. Btw, I totally agree about the hawaldaar behind the tree.

Hi Ann Dee,
lol @ ur driving free on the roads like a wild mare running in a wide open field! :-)

eye-in-sty-in said...

Hi Vee,
Not after your vacation... you need a week to give thought to anything this interesting and taxing :P

Hi Vimmuuu,
Yep... and they'd drop you right at your doorstep - talk about saving time and the rickshaw bill! I'm sure MNS and Ram sena will object strongly to that. Come to think of it, if you discount the multiple wheels on an airplane, both have 3 wheels! :D That should make license and registration a breeze :P

Hi Nikki,
C'mon - wake up those brain cells! You lose what you don't use :P

Hi CP,
You Betcha! A sto psign at a traffic signal!! The CM's In-Laws should have the sign making contract! In Balgalore, I once saw a guy ride a bike from underneath a traffic cop's hand while the latter was signalling the traffic in the biker's lane to stop. The traffic cop didn't even bother to chase him and there was no other cop to give chase either! Atleast in Bombay, the traffic cops work in teams :-)

Hi PH,
Hey, If all that were to happen, atleast the Work From Home culture will get a boost in India - Theres a silver lining in every dark cloud, you see :-))
And after Steffi Graf, I think you missed Michael Schumacher! And if you missed him, you cannot be a Formula1 fan! {Please don't ask "what is that" I'll have to go kill myself if you do!}

Hi Angel,
Gusthaki ke liye maaf kar do. It has been rectified.... Waise, log bhi kaise kaise hote hai na... kuch yaad bhi nahi rakhte! Peetna chaiye aise logon ko!! Nahi?

Bhargavi said...

rules ! rules make people want to break them ! but if u don't have them there would be chaos everywhere !!

AnjuGandhi said...

i am waiting for that day when no rules will be there ( as if we mumbaities follow any). just imagine what will be so very vigilant police do. no rules so no breaking of rules so no income for the poor cops. behcare royenge and garib ho jaayenge

eye-in-sty-in said...

Hi Bedazzled,
You would think so, wouldn't you? How about the kiddo who behaves after he/she turns 18 and the parents set him/her free? No rules, and yet no chaos... Its time we had a little more faith in ourselves... would that be so bad now :-)

Hi Anju,
Welcome to my blog. Police will then have something better to do - maybe watching the people act civilized, they will spring hope in their hearts too ...

Anupama said...

I don't even want to imagine that scenario in Bangalore considering that half the people on the road seem inclined to kill two-wheeler riders like me regardless of whether there are signals and signs or not! Plus in India people look at a sign only when they are caught for violating it :D

Ava said...

Have you noticed how careful people become when the traffic lights are down?

The speed limit sounds interesting.

Ripples said...

Well like I mentioned earlier B'lore ppl have nyday better traffic sense than Mumbai ppl...But ya if it has 2 be replicated in Mumbai I can only wonder if people will ever be able to reach their destinations...

Anonymous said...

If all traffic rules are removed from Mumbai, the real estate price will reach rock bottom as people would have to stay in their car only for days.
*shiver me timbers*

Zeba said...

Dont 'Oye Zebra' me. you wait till i get hold of the Vaio. i know u teasing me. i know. I KNOW!!!!!!!!

* Wondering if her would be laptop actually has GPS. It better

PurpleHeart said...

:) Of course I do know. I did miss him may be because like you guessed, I am not a F1 fan..:)

AV said...

well, d govt contractors and the ruling party and the traffic-police dept, all of them will lose their share of black money!! so i m sure they would never allow such a thing to happen!! :P

Americanising Desi said...

well we experienced it as soon as i said it!

15+ hours of no electricity and life fell off track on the road!

eye-in-sty-in said...

Hi Anu,
Next time someone will try to hit ur vehicle while driving, make use of the puppy-dog eyes and flash them a smile - they will crash into someone else :-P
Is Bangalore really that bad traffic wise?

Hi Ava,
Yep - they are very careful as they try to find a gap in the junction to squeeze thru it... However, what I was getting at is - to make this a permanent fixture. A signal broken like one day is like a portal open for a short time - people try to rush in. But if the portal is open forever, then the rush may not be necessary.

Hi Ripples,
Your id is very corny as it reminds me of the KS ads!

Hi UH,
That should be money making time for the Train company then :-)

eye-in-sty-in said...

Hi Zebra,
Teasing you? Wait till you get hold of the Vaio? Dont you have it already? You sent me a config, remember! Did you get lost on the way to the store due to lack of GPS?

Hi Sand-piper!
*shaking head from side to side... very disappointed!*

Hi AV,
Precisely why it should happen! Save the tax payer some dough!

Hi AD,
poor you... Aren't you glad you were not driving an electric car!!

Zeba said...

This just proves (I knew it, I knew it, I knew it) that you didn't read that whole post or the post after that!

eye-in-sty-in said...

I did Zebra, you mean the one where you went to the shop and the vaio was the last piece and it was a store display model and you didn't take it? Yes, I read that one :-)

Zeba said...

I bet you gave it a quick read before replying!! How will I have a Vaio if it is out of stock???

But I likes you, so will be nice. Aap bhi kya yaad karoge, maaf kiya!! Haha.

eye-in-sty-in said...

naa... I read it then and I also remembered it because I knew how excited you were about getting it... I may have even commented that "it was not meant to be" or something to that effect.

Do u know why? coz I likes u too :-)

aur haan... aap ki rehem-dili dekh ke meri aankhon mein aasu nahi aaye par mera dil zaroor khush huaa .... aur main bhi thodaa bahot khush huaa :P

very interesting psychology! it's along the same lines of fill a big bowl with ice cream (and less amount of it) and fill a little bowl with more ice cream and people seem to take the big bowl. ok maybe that's not related but it seemed to make sense in my head. it's late.

eye-in-sty-in said...

I have an icecream bowl on my blog... on the RHS (right hand side) ... does that count... (its late here too :P) ... err.. wont they take the small bowl with (apparently) more ice cream?

welcome to my blog... do come back for seconds if u dig the flavour...

floreta said...

lol nice metaphors on ice cream ;) flavor. yes your blog is icecreamgoodness!

eye-in-sty-in said...

why... thank you very much! Its never been called that before ;-) It does take a special something to bring out the flavour. I believe the right word is "churn" (more rambling under the pretext of it being late)

Varun said...

I didn't like one rule there!

The speed limit :D

eye-in-sty-in said...

lol..... some rules are needed no...!
